Features: This book is a supplementary text for the student workbook of University French for the New Century. It follows the structure of the student workbook and has the following characteristics: 1. It is organized into units and sections, with each unit focusing on a specific theme based on commonly used French culture and life topics in the student workbook. Within each unit, it is further divided into four sections: Grammar and Practice (Grammaire et pratique), Vocabulary and Practice (Vocabulaire et pratique), Language Activities Centered on Reading Comprehension (Activités de compréhension écrite), and Language Activities Centered on Listening (Activités orales). The teacher workbook is also structured similarly to the student workbook, with targeted content. This unit and section structure offers the following advantages: 1) It groups similar functional-notional items together in the same unit, making it easier for teachers to organize lessons and for students to practice. The objectives of teaching activities are clear, and the teaching is more focused. 2) It facilitates the repetition of vocabulary that expresses the same functional-notional items, aiding students in association and memorization. Each grammar or vocabulary item is followed by exercises, making the training highly targeted and effective.
2. Emphasis on Guided Teaching and After-Class Learning
Adhering to the student-centered teaching philosophy, we recommend that all exercises in this teacher workbook be completed in pairs or small groups during class. We advocate for teachers to guide students' language practice rather than the traditional one-on-one teaching model. Teachers provide collective guidance on language points, while all language activities are carried out independently by students. This book not only includes answers to exercises and translations of main texts but also offers detailed grammar supplements and teaching suggestions, allowing teachers to focus more on lesson organization. Considering the lack of teaching resources among university French instructors, it is supplemented with rich background materials. To give teachers more autonomy, these sections are written in French.
Student self-directed learning remains the guiding principle of University French for the New Century. In the after-class reading section of the student workbook, teachers are only responsible for checking comprehension and do not provide in-class explanations. The self-directed listening section is entirely completed by students after class.
