From 1745, the years in Scotland were difficult. The Highlanders of Scotland launched a war against King George of England but failed. King George's forces drove many Highlanders out of their homes. David Balfour from the Lowlands of Scotland was not troubled by the English troops. When he left home to start a new life, he did not expect any trouble or danger. But trouble soon followed. He met his wealthy uncle, but his uncle was not happy to learn that he had such a poor nephew. Danger came one after another. David came to the Highlands of Scotland, where he met Alan Breck, a proud Stewart. The Stewarts hated the English and also the Campbells who were loyal to King George, so Alan was a dangerous friend to David. Then a murder occurred. David and Alan fled into the wilderness.
