Features: The Modern Russian-Chinese Dictionary is a medium-sized dictionary recently published by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press. It was compiled and published in response to the growing needs of cooperation and exchange between China and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), as well as the demands of a large number of Chinese learners and users of Russian. All the compilers of the dictionary are professors and associate professors from Beijing Foreign Studies University, all of whom possess strong language proficiency. During the compilation process, they strove to ensure that the dictionary included a wide range of vocabulary, up-to-date content, accurate definitions, logical arrangement, an appropriate size, and clear fonts. After years of effort, the upcoming dictionary has basically acquired these characteristics:
Vocabulary Richness: The dictionary contains over 70,000 basic words, plus more than 10,000 derived words, totaling nearly 90,000 entries. Although its number of entries is not as large as that of comprehensive dictionaries, it fully meets the practical needs of mastering and using Russian by including both high-frequency and low-frequency words, as well as essential vocabulary. Additionally, by excluding obscure words rarely encountered in general reading and translation, it helps users grasp the fundamental lexicon of Russian, making it serve as a guide in terms of both vocabulary and semantics.
Up-to-Date Content: The dictionary is rich in practical content and closely reflects contemporary life. This is first evident in its comprehensive coverage of the development and changes in Russian vocabulary over the past decade: the emergence of new words and expressions, the return of outdated terms, the evolution of urban slang, the increase in foreign words, and changes in the usage of word meanings. Second, the compilers have taken into account both the current realities of Russian society and the recent social, cultural, and linguistic changes in China when providing definitions and example sentences. Third, the appendices in the dictionary accurately reflect recent changes in country names, geographical names, and abbreviations.
Accurate Definitions: Based on the comparison between Russian and Chinese, the compilers have made some corrections to certain imprecise definitions in existing Russian-Chinese dictionaries. When providing Chinese annotations, they have strived to offer more corresponding definitions.
Logical Arrangement: The compilers have considered the characteristics of Russian word formation in the dictionary's layout. Cognates are arranged under the same entry, greatly facilitating learners' memorization and use. The dictionary has an appropriate size, a fresh and clear page layout, and is convenient to carry.
Accessibility: The dictionary's accessibility lies in two aspects: first, it does not prioritize academic depth or comprehensiveness but aims to provide practical help to learners and users; second, it is adaptable to various types of Russian learners, including self-learners. It is also a highly instructive reference for Russian teachers, translators, and other Russian professionals. It is not only a dictionary that can be consulted when needed but also a desk reference book worth flipping through regularly to aid in learning Russian.
