Features: This book is the second volume of the "Oriental" series university-level Russian teaching materials co-authored by Beijing Foreign Studies University and the Pushkin Russian Language Institute in Moscow. It is intended for use in the second semester. The main teaching tasks for this stage are: 1. To teach commonly used words and sentence patterns within the scope of daily life and school life, cultivating listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, and developing communicative abilities in dialogue and narration; 2. To introduce basic grammar points and lay a solid foundation in grammar; 3. To closely integrate reading aloud, speech training, and grammar instruction, consolidating the achievements of phonetic teaching and improving phonetic and intonation qualities. The second volume consists of 12 lessons, covering over 720 new words (excluding supplementary texts), and 30+ grammar points. The structure of the textbook is as follows:
I. Vocabulary, Phonetics, and Speech Training
1. Speech Scope: Provides common speech patterns for the topic, and mastering these patterns will prepare students for situational dialogues.
2. Dialogue Examples: The application of speech scope in typical communicative situations of the topic. Dialogues include many words and phrases from the speech patterns. Students should correctly understand the content of the dialogues, grasp the usage of words, read and practice them accurately and fluently, retell the content, and create dialogues according to given scenarios or by following examples.
3. Main Text: Provides examples of narrative monologues. Exercises include language practice (declension, conjugation, collocation, case connection, cognate words, synonyms, usage of common words and sentence patterns, etc.), exercises to check understanding of the text, and exercises to develop coherent spoken and written language.
4. Supplementary Texts: A supplement to the main texts, focusing on cultivating the ability to understand the main idea of reading materials and independent work skills.
5. Listening: Focuses on improving listening skills while consolidating learned words and appropriately developing speech abilities.
6. Tests: Based on comprehensive review of the learned language materials, these tests check students' abilities in dialogue and monologue (spoken and written) within the scope of the topic. The vocabulary and language materials provided in the textbook primarily focus on items 1–3, which are the key for final tests. Classes with a higher starting level can appropriately increase the requirements for supplementary texts and listening materials.
II. Grammar
The grammar points in this volume are arranged in an alternating manner with lexical and syntactic content, building on the grammar introduction of the previous volume. Starting from basic grammar concepts, each lesson briefly introduces fundamental knowledge of parts of speech and various sentence structures. The lexical part includes the usage of noun cases, the basic meanings of verb aspects, the degrees of adjectives and adverbs, motion verbs, imperative and conditional moods of verbs, the declension and usage of numerals, and prepositions. The syntactic part covers the components of a sentence, types of simple sentences, and basic knowledge of subordinate clauses (explanatory, attributive, and temporal clauses). To achieve the goal of reviewing case formation, the usage of cases is combined with the usage of prepositions. The inclusion of declarative, imperative, exclamatory, affirmative, and negative sentences is to integrate the basic patterns of Russian sentences with training in phonetic and intonation patterns, forms of verb moods and tenses, and sentence word order. The grammar in this volume focuses on the morphology of words and common basic sentence patterns, requiring students to gradually master and refine word morphology skills through the use of various sentence patterns. To this end, classroom teaching should transform the taught grammar knowledge into language skills through extensive exercises.
