Features: This book is compiled based on the Chinese-to-English and English-to-Chinese translation formats and content scope of the New National English Major Level 8 Unified Examination Syllabus in February 2004, aiming to improve readers' bilingual translation skills and achieve the national Level 8 standards. For convenience in writing and use, Chinese-to-English and English-to-Chinese translations are divided into two parts.
Part 1: Chinese-to-English Translation. This section consists of three chapters:
Chapter 1: Introduction to Chinese-to-English Translation, which introduces the requirements, standards, and characteristics of Chinese-to-English translation;
Chapter 2: Secrets to Mastering Chinese-to-English Translation, focusing on several fundamental methods to improve Chinese-to-English translation skills. The better these methods are mastered, the faster the improvement in translation ability. It covers the five basic English sentence patterns, the basic Chinese sentence patterns, and their translation strategies;
Chapter 3: Overcoming Difficulties in Chinese-to-English Translation, divided into three sections. To help readers improve quickly, each chapter includes targeted exercises, featuring article summaries, explanations of difficulties, and reference translations.
Part 2: English-to-Chinese Translation. This section consists of five chapters:
Chapter 1: Overview of English-to-Chinese Translation, divided into four sections that introduce the nature and purpose of translation, translation standards, the requirements for English-to-Chinese translation in the Level 8 exam, and the procedures for taking the exam.
Chapter 2: Basic English-to-Chinese Translation Techniques;
Chapter 3: Advanced English-to-Chinese Translation Techniques;
Chapter 4: Literary Translation Techniques;
Chapter 5: Translation Techniques for Other Text Types.
Each chapter maintains a degree of independence while being interconnected. The translation techniques introduced are not limited to a single genre or type of text. This section also discusses common translation issues in categories frequently tested in exams, such as government, science and technology, culture, news, and literature. Each part is accompanied by corresponding exercises, explanations, and reference answers.
At the end of the book is an appendix. The theoretical and technical sections of this book primarily introduce fundamental translation theories and translation techniques suitable for Chinese readers. The theoretical explanations are designed to be practical, accessible, and in-depth. The exercises provided in the book cover a wide range of topics and are engaging to read. The selected materials are new or relatively recent, ensuring a strong sense of contemporary relevance.
