Features: The teaching requirements for College English Reading stipulated in the "Teaching Requirements for College English Courses" (Trial) include general and higher-level requirements. The general requirements are: the ability to basically read English articles on general topics, with a reading speed of 70 words per minute. When reading longer, slightly less difficult materials quickly, the reading speed reaches 100 words per minute; the ability to basically read English domestic newspapers and magazines, grasp the main idea, understand key facts and related details; the ability to read common practical writing materials encountered in work and daily life; and the ability to use effective reading methods while reading. The higher requirements are: the ability to basically read articles on general topics from popular English newspapers and magazines in English-speaking countries, with a reading speed of 70 words per minute. When reading longer materials quickly, the reading speed reaches 120 words per minute; the ability to skim or scan the reading materials; the ability to read review articles in one's field of study and correctly understand the main idea, grasp key facts, and understand related details. According to this regulation, we have organized a group of experienced experts and professors to write this reading textbook. This reading textbook is also an important part of the New Thinking College English series. In the writing process, we have focused on the following ideas: 1. Reflecting new reform trends. The new College English teaching reform emphasizes listening and speaking skills while also proposing requirements for fast English reading and practical English reading. We have intentionally arranged reading materials from newspapers and magazines and common practical writing materials encountered in work and daily life. The selected articles cover topics such as humanities, history, geography, economy, science and technology, medicine, and psychology. The question types include multiple-choice questions, short answer questions, translation, and sentence completion, etc. At the same time, the content of the articles is about phenomena and issues that students are currently concerned about and thinking about, rather than phenomena and issues that teachers think they should know and understand, reflecting the fun and practicality. 2. Adhering to the principle of gradual progress. Whether it is the difficulty of the article themes or the depth of the content, or the difficulty of the various question types in reading comprehension, this principle is fully realized.
