Features: This dictionary is further revised and improved based on the 9th edition, which won the National Book Award Honor and the Special Award of the National Lexicography Prize. It mainly adds some new words, new meanings, new examples, and a small number of head entries. Some outdated and inaccurate content has been corrected according to national standards, and some obsolete entries and examples have been removed. Some illustrations and appendices have been supplemented and revised, and the format of the entire book has been standardized. The revision scope reaches one-third of the book. Additionally, Pinyin stair-step indexes have been added for easier reference. Compared to the 9th edition, the 10th edition has further improved in terms of scientificity, practicality, standardization, and conciseness.
The first edition of Xinhua Zidian (New China Dictionary) was published in 1953. It was the first dictionary after the founding of New China to use vernacular definitions and examples, and it remains the most influential and authoritative small-scale Chinese dictionary to date. It is considered a model of small-scale Chinese language and literature dictionaries. Xinhua Zidian has already been printed 400 million copies and is the best-selling reference book in the world.
