Features: This is a novel filled with mystery and suspense. The mysterious elements in Mo Bai's novels come from the ungraspable aspects of life in reality, from the ungraspable fate, and from the unpredictable future. However, his novels are close to the hearts of those living at the bottom of society. Although we cannot grasp the mystery of real life, his brushstrokes still point toward life and passion, a heartfelt cry that traverses his entire style, as well as history and life. His rough, almost hoarse voice deeply moves us.
Sun Ming is the owner of a company in Beijing. At an old book stall, he occasionally comes across a book once owned by his lover years ago, reigniting the flame of love buried deep within him. He decides to hire a private detective agency to help him find the owner of the old book. During the summer vacation, a college student named Yingzi comes to the agency for a social survey. The old book piques her great interest, and she, along with her colleagues at the agency, accept the case and begin their search. However, unexpectedly, a series of confusing events keep occurring, and death keeps descending upon them, leaving them bewildered. When the truth of the events finally emerges, some seemingly unrelated events they experienced suddenly reveal their unique meaning and value.
The work is structured from the subjective perspectives of three characters in the novel. Their narratives are independent yet interwoven, leaving ample room for imagination. It is a suspenseful work, with its words permeated with mystery and profound meaning.
