A solitary woman searches for Xuanzang for three hundred and sixty days. The wisdom of the Gobi Desert, one thousand four hundred years old, remains. In the year 2000, a woman embarked on a long journey westward, alone, following the path of Xuanzang's westward quest for the Dharma, as recorded in The Great Tang Records of the Western Regions. Starting from Xi'an, she crossed Kyrgyzstan and Pakistan, traversed the entire Indian subcontinent, facing dangers of kidnapping, interference from Islamist fundamentalists, and the extreme poverty and violence of Buddhist holy sites. Emulating Xuanzang, she sought the past, searching for true hearts in the shadow of history.
Over one thousand three hundred years later, in the interweaving of historical and real time, she experienced Xuanzang's journey firsthand, delving into his spiritual world. Like her protagonist, Shuyun completed a spiritual journey spanning ten thousand miles. She compiled this experience into a book—this is Ten Thousand Miles Without Clouds.
This is not just a travelogue; it is the story of two lives, two journeys. It is a challenging experience, yet also a journey of the heart. Through physical practice and relentless pursuit, the author delves into Xuanzang, undergoing a spiritual baptism and elevation. A "captivating and irresistible travelogue."
It is a book that reflects on the ultimate state of human existence. She traversed desolate and magnificent landscapes, encountered extraordinary individuals along the way, leaving indelible impressions. She vividly shares these experiences with us, giving us a unique and profound understanding of her inner self, the heart of Buddhism, and Chinese and world cultures.
Upon its publication, the English version of this book caused a great stir in the Western world.
