How is leukemia diagnosed?

Patient's question:

I recently suspect that my child may have leukemia. Do I need to take my child to the hospital for diagnosis?

Doctor's answer:

Symptoms of leukemia are primarily related to the destruction of hematopoietic function in the bone marrow. Since white blood cells have the ability to infiltrate tissues, some symptoms are also associated with this characteristic.
1. Symptoms caused by the destruction of bone marrow hematopoietic function
(1) Easy bruising and pinpoint bleeding: This is due to a reduction in megakaryocytes, the cells responsible for producing platelets, leading to a lack of platelets.
(2) Anemia: A decrease in the number of red blood cell precursors results in a lack of red blood cells, making individuals prone to shortness of breath and dizziness during movement or exercise.
Leukemia is a bone marrow disorder, so bone marrow aspiration and bone marrow biopsy tests are necessary to confirm the diagnosis. To further confirm the type of leukemia, additional specialized tests are required to accurately classify the leukemia and provide the most appropriate treatment.
