This book is the diary of an out-of-school girl discovered by Pierre Askhi (Han Shi), a reporter for France's "Libération" newspaper, during his visit to Xihuogu, Ningxia. The diary recounts the daily life of a rural girl in the west, her longing for education, her worries about dropping out, her pain over her mother's refusal to let her go to school, and her determination to change her fate through learning. In 2002, he compiled and published it in Paris, which quickly climbed France's annual bestseller charts. Its rights were sold to multiple countries, including Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan, and the UK, becoming a bestseller in many nations. Soon, Ma Yan became the village's first female middle school student. She devoted herself to studying, received continuous interviews from domestic and international media, participated in promotional events for "The Diary of Ma Yan" in cities like Paris and Beijing, and donated royalties to help other out-of-school children return to school.
As she grew older, Ma Yan experienced joys and frustrations she had never imagined in life and worked hard to create her own future. The revised edition of the diary reflects her new experiences in her new life.
