It is said that he spent four unforgettable years there, yet his name was still repeatedly mentioned in this renowned institution. In 1983, he devoted himself to writing fiction and never looked back, leaving an indelible mark on the contemporary Chinese literary scene. He enjoys "new trends," having immersed himself in them with great enthusiasm. He also appreciates "tradition," delving into the historical fluctuations of China. One day, The Family was published, and later, under the direction of the acclaimed filmmaker Zhang Yimou, it was transformed into the famous Big Red Lantern. It then competed for the Academy Award, though the outcome was not entirely satisfying, yet it shook the Chinese film and literary worlds to a considerable extent. The Chinese public became familiar with The Family through Big Red Lantern, and later developed a fondness for this charming Su Tong. Su Tong, in turn, embarked on his unique literary path, inspired once again by The Family. Su Tong is an exceptionally talented writer with an extraordinary sense of perception and imagination. He gained fame for some of his works and, objectively, became a celebrity-like figure. However, this early success did not turn him into a popular writer.
