What causes a baby to wake up crying in the middle of the night?

Patient's question:

The daughter woke up many times during the night, each time crying. She would fall back asleep after being comforted. Is this a symptom of an illness? How should it be treated?
First follow-up question: (2007-11-29 9:19:58) Is this medicine bitter? If it is bitter, how should it be taken? It's very difficult for children to take medicine!!! Please advise.

Doctor's answer:

Many children are fine during the day, but as soon as night comes, they become restless, cry incessantly, and are often referred to as "night wailers." This is a common sleep disorder in infancy. For children experiencing physiological crying, factors such as a wet diaper, being wrapped too tightly, hunger, thirst, an unsuitable room temperature, or overly thick bedding can make them feel uncomfortable and cause them to cry. In such cases, parents can quickly soothe the child by eliminating these negative stimuli, and the child will soon fall asleep peacefully. Additionally, some children may cry endlessly every time it's time to sleep at night. If parents are patient and gently coax them to sleep, the child will quickly fall asleep soundly.
