Opera is an extremely important part of the 5,000-year civilization of the Chinese nation. Its long history, numerous playwrights, abundant works, spectacular performances, diverse forms, and exquisite artistry are all on par with any other art form. What deserves special attention is that the artistic significance of Chinese opera culture is unique in the history of world art.
Firstly, its enduring prosperity. Since the early formation of opera in the Qin and Han dynasties, it has remained a beloved art form among the Chinese people, without interruption. From the highest rulers to scholars and literati, to ordinary citizens, all have been deeply fascinated by it. It can be said that opera is an integral part of the lives of the Chinese people, just as music is to the Austrians, or philosophy is to the Germans.
Secondly, its vast variety. Statistics show that China currently has over 500 existing opera forms, distributed across the country and cherished by all ethnic groups. This scale is unparalleled in any other country in the world.
What is most important is that Chinese opera is a highly comprehensive and integrated art form. It organically blends narrative literature, poetry, music, dance, acrobatics, martial arts, sculpture, painting, craftsmanship, costumes, and more. Even including history, other genres such as theater, opera, and ballet cannot match its breadth. Every Chinese descendant who values their national culture must understand Chinese opera, and every person who understands it will inevitably be captivated by it and take pride in it.
