For art to exist, for any aesthetic act or aesthetic intuition to exist, an indispensable psychological prerequisite is intoxication. First, intoxication must heighten the sensitivity of the entire body, making uncomfortable art unbearable. All these various forms of intoxication possess this power: first, the intoxication of sexual impulse, the ancient and primitive form of intoxication. At the same time, there is intoxication caused by all great desires and intense emotions: the intoxication of cruelty; the intoxication of destruction; intoxication caused by certain weather influences, such as the intoxication of spring, or intoxication caused by narcotics; finally, the intoxication of will, an accumulated, high intoxication of will.
The essence of intoxication is the sense of heightened power and fullness. From this feeling, people bestow blessings upon all things, forcing them to seek something from them, dominating them—the process is called idealization. Here, we must dispel a prejudice: idealization is not, as commonly believed, about stripping away or excluding minor details. Rather, it is the massive mobilization of the main features that is decisive, to the point where other features disappear.
