Genius is often lonely. Despite his numerous artistic talents, the impoverished Daumier was only recognized for his prints during his time. During his printmaking career, France was experiencing turbulent political changes, and he published a series of political satirical cartoons aimed at mocking and critiquing the monarchy, which also led to his imprisonment. After being unable to create political satirical cartoons, Daumier turned to illustrations and humorous genre paintings, losing some of the political sharpness but gaining genuine care for the common people, which was equally popular. Although Daumier became famous for his satirical cartoons, most people are unfamiliar with his sculptures and paintings, yet for Daumier, his true dream was painting. His paintings are characterized by concise yet expressive brushwork, rich in emotional impact. The French poet and renowned art critic Baudelaire praised him highly, comparing his sketches to those of the already masterful Delacroix and Ingres.
