Background: Catalonia, located on the Mediterranean coast of eastern Spain, is the spiritual homeland of the modern art master Joan Miró. The bright sun, clear blue sky, and unique natural and cultural landscape of Catalonia became the starting point for Miró's art. The name Miró, pronounced "Joan Miró" in Spanish, is pronounced "Joan Miró" in Catalan. The unique traditional culture of his hometown has always been a source of pride for him. In 1937, Miró painted a large mural titled "Harvesters" as an anti-Franco statement, which was exhibited at the Spanish Pavilion of the 1937 Paris World's Fair, echoing Picasso's "Guernica." The figures in Miró's painting are Catalan farmers, with strong, bold lines that express the rebellion, suffering, and unyielding spirit of the entire nation. Miró moved from the colors of Catalonia to the international art style of surrealism, becoming a master of international art. This demonstrates that he was not hindered or limited by his local roots but rather developed a fresh, free, and joyful artistic style from them. His oil painting "The Farm," completed in 1922, was purchased by the renowned writer Ernest Hemingway, who greatly admired the qualities Miró expressed in the work. Hemingway noted, "Whether you are in Spain or far away from it, this painting fully embodies the sentiments of both places. No one else could capture such contrasting moods simultaneously."
Before the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, I visited the Joan Miró Foundation Museum near the Olympic venue. This museum, designed by Antoni Gaudí, features innovative architecture that seamlessly blends with the surrounding lush greenery, creating a natural and open space. The museum's interior provides an excellent backdrop for displaying Miró's works, making them a delight to behold. Miró's other museum is located on Majorca, Spain, and was converted from his late-life studio. His works have been exhibited twice in Taipei, where they have been appreciated by many viewers.
Miró was a painter who wove poetry and dreams into his art. He nurtured his paintings through a poetic approach. His series "The Constellations," completed in 1940, is a dazzling kaleidoscope woven from symbols and colors. The vivid and innovative style he created has had an equally profound influence on art history as Picasso's Cubism. Miró often said that the effort he put into his work each day was no different from that of any ordinary laborer. His poetic and dreamlike creations stemmed from the humble toil of a farmer, while his extraordinary artistry was nurtured by an ordinary life.
The works of the modern art master Joan Miró, with their bold and unrestrained characteristics, reveal a poetic essence. Their simple yet powerful forms, vibrant and lively colors, and skillful transformations in symbolic representation have written a new chapter in modern art. Born in Barcelona, Spain, Miró's early art was deeply influenced by Cézanne. After undergoing the of Cubism and surrealism, he developed a unique style. This book collects Miró's early works, as well as his representative series such as "The Dutch Interior" and "The Constellations," along with his distinctive sculptures and a biography, providing an in-depth analysis of his extraordinary art.
In Miró's world of painting, poetry and visual art intertwine. His boundless imagination roams freely, wild and intense, captivating the viewer. Miró's ideal was to explore and interpret the essence of life and the ever-renewing universe.
