Levi-Strauss (1908— ) was a French anthropologist. Initially studying philosophy, he later switched to anthropology. He introduced structural linguistic perspectives into anthropology, leaving an indelible legacy; he established structuralist methodology, critiqued the then-dominant existentialism, and opened up an entirely new era. His major works include Tristes Tropiques, Structural Anthropology, La Pensée Sauvage, Mythologies, and others.
The 20th century was a period of unprecedented intellectual vitality and prosperity. During this time, numerous intellectual adventurers roamed their speculations, showcasing their talents, focusing on human development and survival, and advocating for the world's progress. As records of these thoughts, philosophical books guided people's thinking and pointed the direction of the world.
Adorno, Lukács, Levinas, Barthes, Althusser, Arendt, Deleuze, Foucault, Habermas, Whitehead, Derrida, Kuhn, Lacan, Jung, Merleau-Ponty, Wittgenstein, Quine, Levi-Strauss, Heidegger, Bataille, Simmel, Benjamin, Bakhtin, Kristeva, Popper, Rawls, Barthes, Eco, Kafka, Gadamer — this dazzling line of thinkers, with their wise thoughts, attract our attention and stir our impulse to get closer to them.
This thirty-one-volume series, copyrighted by Japanese Iwanami Shoten in 1997, represents an Eastern approach to Western renowned philosophers by Japanese scholars. It holds significant reference value for understanding Japanese philosophy and the current state of Japanese scholars' research on Western philosophy.
During the writing process, unlike general introductory books on philosophy, the authors placed particular emphasis on collecting and organizing materials. The four parts — a brief chronology, an outline of major works, explanations of key terms, and a guide to reading — play a crucial role for readers, especially beginners in philosophy, providing them with a convenient pathway.
This is a small window through which to approach philosophers, listen to their voices, and ultimately appreciate the boundless landscape of their thoughts. It is also a winding path for you to maintain clarity amidst the bustling and noisy world.
