The baby has yellow eye discharge in the left eye.

Patient's question:

My baby is now one month old, but one of his eyes has a lot of yellow discharge. He has been fed with milk and breast milk all along. Is he having a heat condition? Should I give him more water?

Doctor's answer:

Newborns are most prone to having excessive eye discharge, and no matter how many times they wash their faces each day, the problem cannot be solved. This often leaves new parents helpless.
1. Irritation from eyelashes. In normal children, at around 2-3 months old, they may wake up with some white eye discharge in the morning. This is because eyelashes tend to grow inward during this period, and the friction stimulates the eyes, causing discharge. Around the age of 1, eyelashes usually grow outward naturally, and the discharge gradually decreases. A warm towel can be used to clean the eyes.
