Features: The National English Proficiency Test (NEPT) system is a series of exams designed and developed by the National Education Examination Center. The PETS exam is open to the public and consists of five levels. Its purpose is to reasonably set the evaluation standards for each level based on China's actual English teaching and the needs of social development, using the same ability scale. It focuses on testing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, ensuring the equivalence of exam scores across different sessions at the same level. Gradually, it connects with college admissions, study abroad, and self-study exams, making exam scores more versatile in their application. The fourth level of the National English Proficiency Test is the intermediate-to-high level among the five levels. Candidates who pass this level have an English proficiency that generally meets the requirements for pursuing postgraduate studies in universities, as well as the basic English needs of general professionals, researchers, or modern corporate managers. To meet the needs of a wide range of candidates, we have organized experienced English teachers and researchers from renowned universities to compile the National English Proficiency Test Textbook, Fourth Level. This textbook contains 12 chapters, each focusing on a specific topic, divided into two units. The content of each unit includes:
1. Dialogues: Based on communicative topics, several dialogue materials are provided. The dialogues are designed to be realistic in context and natural in language, primarily aimed at training learners' listening and speaking skills. Each dialogue is preceded by one or two sentences that set the context, helping learners understand the dialogue.
2. Texts: These are reading materials that reflect the topics. To enhance learners' interest, aid comprehension, and allow for oral practice by connecting with familiar information, each unit text is followed by five questions.
3. Vocabulary and Phrases: These include key and challenging words and phrases from the dialogues and texts. This section provides the international phonetic alphabet, part of speech, Chinese definitions for words, and Chinese definitions for phrases.
4. Notes: These target the dialogues and texts, covering three aspects: first, highlighting difficulties in grammar and vocabulary; second, translating complex sentences and providing examples to expand learners' knowledge; third, introducing relevant cultural background to deepen understanding of the dialogues and texts.
5. Exercises: These are designed to test the topics and key content of each chapter, with question types largely aligned with the exam syllabus to help learners assess their learning progress.
6. Supplementary Readings: To provide deeper insights into related topics and improve reading skills, each chapter includes a supplementary reading.
At the end of the book, there are six appendices, including:
(1) Functional-Notional Table;
(2) Language Skills Table;
(3) Text Questions and Answers;
(4) Listening Exercise Scripts;
(5) After-Class Exercise Answers;
(6) Vocabulary and Phrases Summary.
The accompanying MP3 disc includes recordings of dialogues, texts, vocabulary, after-class listening exercises, and supplementary reading materials. It can be played on computers, as well as CD players, VCD players, and DVD players with MP3 functionality.
