Why do children often cry?

Patient's question:

Why does my daughter's eyes often tear up? Every morning she has tears, and occasionally during the day as well. What could be the reason? She's only 4 months old.

Doctor's answer:

Children's eyes are watery and very cute, but if they are crying tears, parents should not take it lightly. Two to four percent of newborns suffer from blocked lacrimal ducts, where tears cannot flow out smoothly, and "tears in the eyes." Due to the ease of conjunctivitis infection, it can lead to amblyopia if left untreated for a long time. Parents should consider massaging and applying warm compresses to their children. If they still cannot improve by the time they are one year old, they should consider lacrimal duct probing.
Doctors say the hospital often receives newborns crying due to blocked lacrimal ducts. Some children have already been infected. The area near the nasal passage in the lacrimal duct is covered with a membrane, which usually opens on its own at birth. However, if it does not open, it can cause blocked lacrimal ducts and tears. Tears flow back into the eyes, leaving the child's eyes always full of tears.
