What should I do if there is a lot of yellow eye discharge in my left eye?

Patient's question:

23-day-old newborn, the left eye has had yellow discharge since birth, accompanied by a small amount of tearing, no swelling or protrusion on the inside of the eye, and no redness or swelling of the eyelids. What should I do?

Doctor's answer:

Children often have tears or eye discharge. Parents should massage the lacrimal sac area in a top-down order on the affected side of the eye and nose every day. When massaging, press the thumb against the skin and gently move it over the lacrimal sac area, twice a day, four times each time. If massage does not work, take the child to the hospital for lacrimal canal irrigation. If it still does not work, lacrimal canal probing should be performed as soon as possible. Otherwise, it may cause inflammation around the lacrimal sac or the formation of a lacrimal fistula, which is not only difficult to treat completely but also affects appearance.
