Patient's question:
My baby is two months old. Since the second half of the second month, she has been producing eye discharge every day. She often cries tears even when she's not crying. What could be the reason for this?Doctor's answer:
Hello, your baby's condition should be neonatal dacryocystitis. The infant tear drainage system gradually forms during embryonic development, with the nasolacrimal duct at the lower end forming the latest. At birth, there is a valve-like fold at the lower end of the nasolacrimal duct that closes it. Within a few months after birth, the nasolacrimal duct can open on its own. If it does not open, secondary tear sac infection can lead to the formation of discharge, resulting in neonatal dacryocystitis. Place your index finger in the lacrimal sac area (approximately the sides of the nasal root) and perform regular massage and pressure. Do this 3 to 4 times a day and persist for several weeks to months. The lower end of the nasolacrimal duct can then open.
