Features: Wang Ji, styled Ruzhong, styled Longxi, was a high disciple of Wang Yangming. He not only held a significant position in the development of Yangming thought during the middle and late Ming Dynasty but also had a profound influence on the formation of Japanese Yangming thought. Wang Ji challenged the feudal ethics of the time with his unique "Four Emptiness Theory." He inherited the positive aspects of Yangming thought and inspired his private disciple Li Zhi, thereby pushing the humanistic trend of the middle and late Ming Dynasty to its peak. This book, through abundant materials, provides a detailed account of his life, supplements the brief shortcomings of existing chronicles of Wang Ji, and offers a comprehensive discussion of his philosophical propositions starting from the "Heavenly Spring Enlightenment." It also includes a chapter at the end that narrates the spread of Wang Ji's thought to Japan and the research conducted by Japanese scholars on him.
Wang Ji was one of Wang Yangming's most important disciples. His significance lies not only in the way Huang Zongxi described it—how the teachings of the Yangming Master spread across the world with the emergence of Taihu and Longxi, making Wang thought a trend that replaced Zhu thought in the middle and late Ming Dynasty—but also in being the longest-lived and most controversial among Wang Yangming's direct disciples. He spent his life teaching and debating, allowing us to observe the rise and division of Wang thought from the Zhengde, Jiajing, Longqing, to the early Wanli period. More importantly, as he pioneered the early enlightenment thought in China, he holds a significant position in the history of Chinese philosophy.
This book, through abundant materials, provides a detailed account of his life, supplements the brief shortcomings of existing chronicles of Wang Ji, and offers a comprehensive discussion of his philosophical propositions starting from the "Heavenly Spring Enlightenment." It points out the dual nature of his philosophical system—high and low, and authority and practicality—and analyzes the new propositions he proposed, explaining the essential characteristics and historical impact of his philosophical thought. At the end, the book also includes a special chapter to narrate the spread of Wang Ji's thought to Japan and the research conducted by Japanese scholars on him.
