After the second Robotech War, although the Southern Cross Army destroyed the invading Robotech rulers, Earth was left severely weakened. Several years later, Earth fell into the hands of the even more powerful Zentradi. Upon learning of Earth's fall, General Rick Hunter immediately led the expeditionary force back into space.
