Features: Guangdong is the province with the longest history of opening up and the deepest level of openness in China. Among the over 30 million overseas Chinese and (Overseas Chinese), two-thirds of them are from Guangdong. This book reviews the history of overseas Chinese from Guangdong, allowing readers to get a general understanding of this largest group of overseas Chinese in China. They are neither heroes nor villains; in their ordinary lives, they have played out a history worth remembering. For Guangdong, producing such a large number of overseas Chinese is just a characteristic, and there is no need to be proud of it, because almost all places that produce waves of emigration are poor, backward, war-torn, and (turbulent), places that people avoid.
Regardless, increasing understanding of the world is the cure for ignorance. When, in the late Qing Dynasty, a group of boys studying in the United States, dragging their queues (long hair braids) through the streets, were called "Chinese girls" by Americans, or when, in modern China's anti-Christian movement, rumors spread that nuns used the eyes of orphans to make medicine, it showed that China did not understand the world, and the world did not understand China. Mutual understanding cannot eliminate differences or barriers, but it can eliminate misunderstandings and eliminate baseless assumptions.
