Features: The Sino-Japanese War is a monumental event in modern Chinese history. There is an abundant amount of historical materials regarding the Sino-Japanese War. This book collects some of the most significant materials, divided into three parts and three appendices: First is the Comprehensive Part, which includes texts summarizing the course of the Sino-Japanese War. Next is the Preface, covering texts related to the period before the war (before February of the 20th year of the Guangxu reign). Then comes the Main Part, which consists of various materials related to the war. Appendix I includes five treaties between China and Japan; Appendix II contains remarks by Westerners on various activities during the war; Appendix III provides accounts of the "Yimou Incident" in Korea in winter 1895. This book is an important resource for studying the Sino-Japanese War.
The Sino-Japanese War is a monumental event in modern Chinese history. On one hand, it marked the beginning of China's more severe invasion and subjugation, as China became the focal point of conflicts among imperialist powers in the East after the First Sino-Japanese War. China rapidly advanced towards further semi-colonialization and once faced the crisis of being partitioned by enemies. On the other hand, starting from the First Sino-Japanese War, the resistance of the Chinese people also intensified along with the worsening situation. During the war, the Chinese people carried out just and heroic resistance. After the ruling class humbly surrendered to the enemy, the people of Taiwan province continued their heroic struggle against the invaders, and the nationwide outcry against the Treaty of Shimonoseki led to a rapid rise in revolutionary sentiments. Domestic class relations underwent significant changes, making the First Sino-Japanese War a starting point for studying the changes in various aspects of Chinese society in the years following 1895.
The nature of the Sino-Japanese War is extremely clear. Japanese militarists had long been plotting to invade Korea and further expand into China, a fact proven by extensive historical materials (including the widely known "Tanaka Memorial") and the outcome of the war. The U.S. bourgeoisie supported Japan's expansion, attempting to monopolize the markets of Korea and Northeast China, which is also a well-known fact. Therefore, in this war, the resistance of the Chinese and Korean people was equally an anti-invasion and self-defense struggle. Without a doubt, in this war, justice was on the side of the Chinese and Korean people. This war also profoundly demonstrated the close and interdependent relationship between the heroic Korean and Chinese people in their joint struggle against colonialism. This holds great practical significance even today.
