The first volume of this book covers the period from the primitive commune to the unification of the centralized feudal state, the Qin Dynasty. It consists of five chapters, respectively narrating the political history, economic development, institutional evolution, and cultural and ideological conditions of the primitive commune era, the Xia and Shang periods, the Western Zhou period, the Eastern Zhou period, and the Warring States period.
The second volume covers the period from the Qin Dynasty to the unification of the Sui Dynasty. It consists of six chapters, respectively narrating the rise and fall of each dynasty, economic, cultural, and interactions and integration among ethnic groups during the Qin Dynasty, Western Han Dynasty, Eastern Han Dynasty, Three Kingdoms period, Western Jin Dynasty, Sixteen Kingdoms period, Eastern Jin Dynasty and Southern Dynasties, and Northern Dynasties.
The third volume is the first part of the third edition of The Comprehensive History of China, covering the Sui, Tang, and Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. The sixth volume is the second part of the fourth edition of The Comprehensive History of China.
