Patient's question:
I have a friend who has varicocele. Is the incidence rate high?Doctor's answer:
Varicocele (VC) is a common urogenital disorder in men and a major cause of male infertility. It is more prevalent in young and middle-aged adults, with an incidence rate of 10% to 15% in the normal male population and accounting for 19% to 41% of male infertility cases. Varicocele is caused by the dilation of the spermatic veins surrounding the spermatic cord and the pampiniform plexus, leading to vascular spermatogenesis dysfunction. It is more commonly unilateral, affecting the left side, but can also be bilateral or occur unilaterally on the right. Traditional surgery involves an inguinal incision, high ligation of the internal spermatic veins, and excision of partially dilated veins within the scrotum.
