As the 50th anniversary of the death of the 20th-century French heavyweight writer André Gide is approaching, both (Huacheng Publishing House) and (Renmin Literature Publishing House) planned to publish a collected works of Gide. After consultation, it was decided to adopt a flexible and collaborative approach to jointly launch the "Gide Collected Works."
The "Gide Collected Works" are divided into five volumes: "Prose Volume," "Biography Volume," "Diary Volume," "Travelogue Volume," and "Literary Theory Volume." Each volume is self-contained but can also be combined. Among these five volumes, five-thirds of the chapters are being translated and introduced to Chinese readers for the first time.
The "Human Grain" selected in the five-volume edition is regarded as the "disease of the new century" and the "bible of the restless generation." The uproar caused by "Return from the Soviet Union" has long surpassed the significance of the event itself. "If Seeds Do Not Die," in which the author recounts his life until the day before his marriage at the age of 26, records his slow and arduous journey in striving for freedom. In the literary theory section, "Dostoevsky" is both an essay on literature and a discussion of the author, while "The Imaginary Interview" is bold and innovative, offering many insightful observations. His diaries, written from 1887 when he was 14 until his death in 1950, contain the genetic code of all his works and are invaluable and unique materials for studying his literary works and life. They can be considered his least embellished "autobiography."
