If you can only read one book, "Selected Works of Jean-Paul Sartre" by Beijing Yanshan Publishing House is a great choice. This book is a collection of travel writings by the renowned French writer Jean-Paul Sartre, including six parts: "Return from the Soviet Union," "The Congo Journey," "Return from Chad," "Abandoning Travel," "Wandering Through Turkey," and "Travelogue of Bukhara."
This book is a collection of autobiographical works by the famous French writer Jean-Paul Sartre. André Sartre is a household name in France and the winner of the 1947 Nobel Prize in Literature. Sartre is one of the transitional writers in the French novel tradition, whose novels broke the traditional French literary techniques led by Balzac but were not as "avant-garde" as modern French novels.
As the 50th anniversary of the death of the 20th-century French heavyweight writer Jean-Paul Sartre is approaching, both Huacheng Publishing House and People's Literature Publishing House planned to publish a collection of Sartre's works. After consultation, it was decided to adopt a flexible and collaborative approach to jointly launch "The Collected Works of Jean-Paul Sartre."
The "Collected Works of Jean-Paul Sartre" are divided into five volumes: "Essays," "Biographies," "Diaries," "Travel Writings," and "Literary Criticism," each independently compiled but also combinable. Among these five volumes, three-fifths of the chapters are being translated and introduced to Chinese readers for the first time.
The "Human Grain" selected in the five-volume set is regarded as the "illness of the new century" and the "bible of the restless generation." The controversy caused by "Return from the Soviet Union" has long exceeded the significance of the event itself. "If Seeds Do Not Die," in which the author recounts his life until the day before his marriage at the age of 26, records his slow and arduous journey in striving for freedom. In the literary criticism, "Dostoevsky" is both an essay on literature and a critique of the person, while "The Imaginary Interview" is bold and innovative, offering many profound insights. His diaries, written from 1887 when he was 14 until his death in 1950, contain the genes of all his works and are extremely valuable and unique materials for studying his literary works and legendary life. They can be considered his least embellished "autobiography."
