Patient's question:
I'm only 19 years old. Lately, I've been experiencing itching in my groin area, but I couldn't figure out what was causing it. Today, I took a closer look and realized it was the pubic lice you mentioned. However, after reading your advice, I don't want to shave my pubic hair. Besides, I haven't had any sexual activity! Can you explain this to me? Also, how should I treat it?Doctor's answer:
Hello: Lice are ectoparasites, which can be divided into three types based on their species, morphology, and sites of infestation:(1) Body lice: These lice infest clothing seams and are also known as cloth lice.
(2) Head lice: These lice infest the scalp and lay eggs.
(3) Pubic lice: These lice infest the pubic hair.
Pubic lice are almost exclusively spread through sexual contact, often affecting both partners simultaneously, and are therefore considered a sexually transmitted infection. Pubic lice attach firmly to the base of pubic hair or cling to the surface of the pubic region using their hook-like feet to feed on human blood. They also release venom through their saliva, causing localized itching and inflammatory reactions, such as red papules or eczema-like changes. Pubic lice are easily treatable; removing the pubic hair and burning it can eliminate their infestation conditions.
Topical pediculicides include:
① Urea cream: Apply locally twice daily for 5–7 days.
② Sulfur ointment: Apply locally to kill lice.
