What should I do if my child has loose stools?

Patient's question:

My daughter has been two and a half months old, and her bowel movements have always been normal. But in the past two days, her stool has been very loose, resembling egg white in consistency, and it has a fishy smell. By the way, since birth, my daughter has always experienced gurgling milk, usually not much, but sometimes it comes out in a gush, like the consistency of tofu pudding.

Doctor's answer:

Diarrhea: It is characterized by an increase in the frequency of bowel movements and changes in stool characteristics. The most common causes of infant diarrhea are indigestion and intestinal inflammation. Generally, the presence of foam in a child's stool often indicates indigestion. In single-child households, indigestion can lead to excessive food residue, which, when fermented by intestinal bacteria, produces gas, resulting in the mixing of foam in the stool. Additionally, foam in the stool may also be related to a child crying for too long and swallowing more air. If the child also has vomiting, the vomited milk has an acidic odor, contains undigested milk clumps, or exhibits abdominal distension, the stool may be foamy without mucus or pus, with only an increase in stool volume, the stool being yellow or slightly green, pasty, or rotten, indicating indigestion.
