Features: The study of Chinese linguistics and writing systems underwent a historical process from emergence to establishment, development, and prosperity during the first hundred years of the 20th century. This book is divided into four parts to introduce this process:
(1) Introduction: Briefly describes the formation of modern Chinese linguistics at the beginning of the 20th century and its development in subsequent historical periods;
(2) Presents the development and achievements of major disciplines in linguistics in the 20th century, covering eight topics: Chinese grammar research, the historical development and synchronic description of phonetics, language survey and description, Chinese lexical semantics research, writing systems research, Chinese rhetoric research, the history of linguistics, and applied linguistics;
(3) Reviews and analyzes major debates in linguistics during the 20th century, such as language vs. speech, phylogenetic classification of East Asian languages, regionalization of Chinese dialects, characteristics of modern Chinese grammar and the localism perspective in Chinese grammar research, classification of Chinese parts of speech, Chinese syntactic analysis, whether rhetoric belongs to speech linguistics, the nature of Qieyun and its phonological basis, the nature of Chinese characters, and writing system reform;
(4) Summarizes the emergence of linguistic research institutions, academic associations, academic journals, and major reference works during the 20th century. At the end of the book, there is a chronicle of major events in the development of linguistics in the 20th century.
