Features: Shaanxi, as the capital of eleven dynasties such as the Zhou, Qin, Han, and Tang, and the birthplace of Confucian classics, boasts rich cultural heritage and enjoys unique advantages. Therefore, the Institute of Lexicography at Shaanxi Normal University began planning the compilation of the Thirteen Classics Dictionary and the Index of Terms in the Thirteen Classics in 1984, aiming to contribute to the inheritance and promotion of the fine traditional culture of the nation. In October 1987, the Shaanxi Provincial Press and Publication Administration and Shaanxi People's Publishing House organized an expert review, recognizing this as a great endeavor that would benefit both the present and future generations. They supported the project and decided to entrust the Institute of Lexicography at Shaanxi Normal University with the daily compilation work. Subsequently, the National Press and Publication Administration included this project in the National Lexicography Compilation and Publishing Plan (1988-2000).
The Institute of Lexicography at Shaanxi Normal University organized experts from eleven provinces and cities across the country and began the compilation work in February 1988.
The Thirteen Classics Dictionary is a specialized dictionary compiled to assist readers in reading and studying the Thirteen Classics. The dictionary is divided into sections corresponding to the thirteen classics, with each classic forming a volume. Each volume includes all the words, phrases, fixed expressions, and sentences containing classical meanings or special significance from the respective classics as entries. The entries are annotated with pronunciation and part of speech (referring to monosyllabic and polysyllabic words), with meanings categorized and scientifically explained, along with textual evidence. In the definitions, special attention is paid to specialized terms. For these terms, while accurately explaining their connotations in the context of the relevant classics, their origins, historical evolution, functions, and influences are also described. The entries and their meanings are accompanied by frequency statistics, providing reliable information for readers to understand the usage, changes in meaning, and evolution of these terms.
The dictionary includes an Index by Radicals, an Index by Phonetic Order, and a Four-Corner Code Index, making it convenient to search. It also features rubbings of the Tang Kaicheng Stone Classics.
