Features: Although Pascal moved away from scientific research, his thoughts and talents shone even brighter in the realm of human science. He applied the fundamental qualities of a scientist to social struggles and philosophical exploration, demonstrating exceptional strengths in his unwavering convictions, relentless pursuit, sharp intellect, and precise reasoning. Pascal inherited and advanced the tradition of rationalism, using reason to critique everything. At the same time, guided by the idea that all truths must manifest in the form of contradictions, he pointed out the inherent contradictions and limitations of reason itself. He employed the same approach to examine various aspects, including human nature, the world, society, history, life, philosophy, and religion. His writings often reveal the brilliance of dialectical thinking and the proactive, combative edge of his arguments. Later, many influential thinkers, from Voltaire and Rousseau to modern figures like Sartre, were influenced to varying degrees by Pascal's ideas. The bourgeois Enlightenment movement, which began with humanism as its form, reached a stage of completion during Pascal's time. As a result of his contributions to the study of human beings, Pascal's assertion that "Man is a thinking reed" (from Pensées, L200, B347) became a widely renowned saying. Pascal's philosophical system is fundamentally idealistic, but in his skepticism toward old traditions, advocacy of bourgeois humanism, and fierce intellectual battles against the official theological doctrines of the Catholic Church, represented by the Jesuits, he demonstrated a clear anti-feudal historical progressiveness. His works reflect, to some extent, the thoughts and practices of the rising bourgeois opposition on the European continent during the early modern period.
