Features: Since the beginning of the new century, strengthening corporate responsibility has become a hot topic. Corporate responsibility includes three aspects or levels: shareholder responsibility, social responsibility, and environmental responsibility. The arguments from numerous multinational corporations regarding the relationship between corporate social and environmental responsibility and shareholder interests, as well as the findings of academic research, all indicate that strengthening corporate responsibility is not a burden for multinational corporations but rather helps enhance their competitiveness. Strengthening corporate responsibility represents a new advancement in business management concepts and a new development in corporate management theory in the era of economic globalization. Does strengthening corporate responsibility bring challenges or opportunities to Chinese enterprises? Strengthening corporate responsibility presents both challenges and opportunities to Chinese enterprises. It requires Chinese enterprises to participate in global competition according to the new rules of the new stage of commercial civilization. At the same time, it also provides businesses with a path to enhance their competitiveness. From February 16 to 17, 2006, the Research Institute of International Trade and Economic Cooperation under the Ministry of Commerce and the Beijing New Century Multinational Corporation Research Institute co-hosted the 2006 "Multinational Corporations China Forum." The theme of the forum was set as "Chinese Enterprises, Corporate Responsibility, and Soft Competitiveness." As the main organizers, our goal was to create a platform for government officials, scholars, and entrepreneurs from China and abroad to discuss how to strengthen corporate responsibility in China, how to meet the challenges of this trend, and how to seize opportunities to enhance corporate soft competitiveness through strengthening corporate responsibility. The Office of Global Compact in the Secretariat of the United Nations Secretary-General, the China Business Group Promotion Association, the Economic Department of People's Daily, People's Daily Online, the Economic Department of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, the Global Mergers and Acquisitions Center of the World Economy and Politics Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Zhuan Nang Media, and Contemporary Business Manager served as co-organizers and actively participated in the summit. The forum invited over 50 speakers. Leaders from the Ministry of Commerce, the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission, representatives from the United Nations Office, and leaders from the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce delivered warm opening remarks. Nearly 20 senior government officials and experts spoke at the conference, and over 30 leaders from multinational corporations, state-owned enterprises, and private enterprises exchanged ideas. The entire summit lasted for two days, with over 400 representatives from government departments, international organizations, Chinese and foreign business circles, industry associations, and the media in attendance. The forum featured many thought-provoking insights and valuable experiences. We have compiled these speeches and papers into a book, hoping to share them with a broader audience.
