Features: This book systematically introduces Western classical music, covering over 50 styles and schools from seven major development periods and more than 100 representative figures, with an appreciation of over 100 works. It is believed that the written record of Western music began with ancient Greece. Those tunes reconstructed and deciphered from fragmented archaeological artifacts, spanning a millennium, preserve the sounds of Plato and Aristotle's era. In the 8th century, medieval church music—Gregorian chant—formally launched the long scroll of Western art music. From then on, this great river surged forward, not only giving birth to an ocean of musical works and a galaxy of musical masters but also shaping numerous musical styles. When writing this book, the author firmly established a clear concept: Western music is an art born from Western civilization, and musical masters and classic works are not isolated "islands" floating on the surface. Therefore, this book abandons the conventional genre-based narrative model used in most similar books. It begins with ancient Greek and Roman music, medieval and Renaissance music, and progresses through the most important styles and schools in Western music history—Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Nationalist, Impressionism, and 20th-century Modernism—integrating all figures and works into the historical development of music. Music appreciation is both simple and complex. It is first and foremost a purely sensory aesthetic activity; as long as you listen attentively, you can perceive and appreciate it. However, Western music has a long history, numerous masters, diverse styles, and complex schools, with many works linked to the social, cultural, political, economic, philosophical, religious, literary, and even psychological trends of their time. This requires incorporating rational elements into the appreciation process. Thus, both the and aspects of music appreciation are equally important and cannot be neglected. When listening to music, if we stop at mere perception, it will hinder our deeper understanding of musical works, composers, and even entire musical styles and schools. Similarly, rational analysis of musical works must be grounded in auditory experience; otherwise, it is no better than theorizing in a vacuum. Focusing on the means we cannot avoid comparing and appreciating aspects such as performance versions and stylistic features; focusing on the inevitably involves relevant historical and artistic knowledge. This book strives to integrate both. On one hand, it follows the timeline of music history, introducing the styles and schools of different periods and the lives of composers through sections like "Introduction" and "Master Composers," while providing micro-level appreciations and critiques of classic works via the "Masterpiece Appreciation" section. Related knowledge such as musical genres, instruments, and music theory is compiled into sections like "Knowledge Window" and "Fun Facts." On the other hand, it starts from the practical needs of the audience, featuring sections like "Classic Works," "Performing Masters," and "Record Recommendations," introducing the artistic careers and stylistic characteristics of renowned performers and including brief CD reviews to assist readers in selecting recordings. Dear readers, open your ears now and dive into the vast ocean of Western classical music, and let yourself fully experience its beauty and wonder!
