Patient's question:
I have frequent erections after a circumcision surgery. Does it affect the surgery? I used to have balanitis, will it still cause inflammation after the surgery?First follow-up question: How long does the swelling last after the surgery?
Doctor's answer:
Edema after circumcision is normal, as trauma requires time to heal and establish lymphatic circulation. Basic healing typically occurs within about a week, with full recovery taking around a month. Sexual activity should be avoided for 45 days post-surgery. The glans should remain exposed, and dry peeling is common. Avoid spicy, alcoholic, or irritating foods to prevent inflammation. Take a sedative before bed (as directed by your doctor) to prevent erections that may cause pain or bleeding. Young men should be particularly cautious, as the nerve endings of the long-covered glans are highly sensitive and may easily become erect once exposed. Therefore, avoid reading pornographic materials or watching stimulating content. Couples should temporarily separate and avoid hugs, kisses, or other forms of sexual stimulation. Wear loose underwear when urinating post-surgery and avoid wetting the dressing during urination. If the dressing becomes wet, replace it promptly. Take medication as prescribed to prevent infection.
