Features: Looking back at the past 25 years, the Taiwan Research Institute of Xiamen University has developed into the Taiwan Research Institute. The Taiwan studies at Xiamen University has progressed from a key discipline in Fujian Province to a key research base for humanities and social sciences in the Ministry of Education, and then further advanced to the innovative base for philosophy and social sciences under the "Project 985." These achievements are the result of the hard work and wisdom of all colleagues who have worked here in the past and are currently working here. Looking ahead, we need to continue to promote the spirit of our predecessors—historically, comprehensively, and realistically understanding Taiwan, promoting academic exchanges across the Taiwan Strait, and serving the great cause of national unification. More importantly, we must be down-to-earth, always self-reflective, and strengthen both fundamental and cutting-edge research while deepening our foundational studies. The five collected essays in this issue are titled "Essentials," but in reality, they are "academic self-examinations" of all the full-time researchers in our institute. We hope that it will become a target for our academic peers who deeply care about and are committed to the Taiwan Research Institute of Xiamen University—any constructive criticism and suggestions will serve as motivation for the continued growth of Taiwan studies at Xiamen University.
