What are the reasons for a split urine stream

Patient's question:

All symptoms: Diversion of urine, sometimes strong and sometimes weak Onset time and cause: More than a year, I think Treatment status: None Desired help: Can you tell me what the cause is, or what the etiology is?

Doctor's answer:

Self-masturbation or sexual activity can cause a split stream during urination, primarily because some semen remains in the urethra after ejaculation, and the corpus cavernosum has not fully returned to normal congestion. This leads to difficulty in urination flow. Additionally, excessive tension and spasm of the urethral sphincter can cause discomfort during urination. This is a normal physiological response and there is no need to panic unnecessarily.
If the split stream during urination occurs frequently or for a long period, it may be related to urogenital system diseases, such as urethritis or prostatitis. In such cases, due to urethral congestion, swelling, and increased secretions, the flow of urine is affected. Chronic inflammation may even lead to scar formation, hindering smooth urination. These conditions, apart from the split stream, often accompany symptoms like frequent urination, urgency, and pain. Additionally, the presence of urethral stones, or conditions like phimosis (retractable foreskin) and paraphimosis (inability to retract the foreskin), can also cause partial narrowing of the urethral meatus.
