No one falls in love with a city for no reason, nor writes a book about it without cause. Prague is the story I want to tell. Only when I open its chapters do my memories become clear, and I reveal the longing hidden in my heart. The ancient castles, the cobblestone streets of the Old Town, the forests in the suburbs, the lights of the bars, the water birds flying over the Vltava River, the bells of St. Vitus Cathedral, the Czech friends, and the colleagues and students of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague—all these are unforgettable. Prague is world-famous for its beauty and romance. This city preserves perfect ancient architecture and is known as the "Museum of World Architecture." It is the only city in Europe that has not been destroyed by war. Throughout history, Prague has produced many renowned writers and musicians, including Ha?ek, Kafka, Kundera, Smetana, and Dvo?ák, among others. Undoubtedly, Prague has been a major artistic hub in European history.
Contemporary artist Qu Yan lived in Prague for four years. As a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, he has a unique perspective and profound experience of the city. This book is far from a casual travelogue; it is an artist's experience of Prague's spirit, reflections on life, cultural thoughts, and artistic pursuits. It is also an artist's inner journey in a foreign land. From the artist's perspective and viewpoint, the book narrates Prague's architecture, history, culture, music, photography, contemporary art, cultural exchanges, and the spirit of intellectuals, accompanied by over 100 illustrations. The images include photographs of the author's life in Prague, architectural landscapes he captured, as well as works by Prague photographers and artists.
Currently, there is no systematic book about Prague in China, especially one dedicated to its spirit and art. With the growing influence of Eastern European intellectuals and writers on Chinese readers, it becomes even more necessary to understand their spiritual background. This book provides a comprehensive perspective for fully understanding the history and culture, as well as the thoughts and spirit of the Czech Republic and Prague.
