Features: Huang Tifang (1832—1899), styled Shulan, styled Xunyin, styled Chenyin, alias Sounan, alias Dongyou Hanshan Laoren, known as Rui'an Mr., was a native of Rui'an, Zhejiang. He was a recommended scholar in the first year of the Xianfeng reign (1851) and a jinshi in the second year of the Tongzhi reign (1863). He was selected as a Ciji (a rank of scholar in the Hanlin Academy) and initially appointed as a compiler in the Hanlin Academy. Later, he held positions such as Xiamalang of the Jingshiyuan in the Zhensi Office, Zuoshusi of the Zuochunfang, Shaofu, and Zhensi. He served as the academic inspector of Fujian, Shandong, and Jiangsu provinces and was successively promoted to the rank of Neiguan and the left assistant minister of the Ministry of War. He was known for upholding integrity and speaking boldly in court, often submitting memorials to propose policies, criticize current affairs, and impeach officials. He was a resolute and upright minister during the Guangxu reign, a key figure in the Qingliu faction, and was known as one of the "Four Hanlin Ministers" alongside Bao Ting, Zhang Peilun, and Zhang Zhidong. This book compiles Huang Tifang's manuscripts, covering politics, literature, and ideological and political discourse, which will be helpful for exploring the political activities of the Qingliu faction in the late Qing period.
