Can varicocele affect fertility?

Patient's question:

In October 2014, an ultrasound examination revealed left varicocele. In August 2015, an ultrasound similarly detected left varicocele. Semen analysis showed two abnormalities. First, the semen volume was less than 1 (normal is 1.5). Progressive motility was 30% (normal is 32%), and all other parameters were normal.

Doctor's answer:

Varicocele refers to the condition where veins in the spermatic cord of a male become dilated and tortuous due to impaired venous. It is a common disease among young and middle-aged men, characterized by the dilatation, tortuosity, and elongation of the pampiniform plexus (vein vascular) in the spermatic cord caused by venous blood stasis. The incidence rate among the male population is 10-15%, accounting for 15-20% of male infertility. It can affect pregnancy, and patients should seek treatment as soon as possible.
