Patient's question:
Is male benign prostatic hyperplasia serious? Recently, urination has always been very difficult. I checked it and found out that I have benign prostatic hyperplasia.Doctor's answer:
Hello, when benign prostatic hyperplasia occurs, the plasma zinc content increases significantly. It can serve as one of the diagnostic indicators for benign prostatic hyperplasia and is also a common disease among elderly men. In the early stage of benign prostatic hyperplasia, mild obstruction occurs in the urethra. Due to the compensatory function of the bladder, patients can still empty their urine on time, but the time required for urination has become longer than that of normal individuals. As benign prostatic hyperplasia progresses to the middle stage, the obstruction in the urethra worsens, and the urethral resistance increases, exceeding the bladder's ability to urinate. Patients then experience symptoms such as frequent urination and urgency. The urine in the bladder cannot be completely emptied, leading to residual urine. At this stage, if the patient becomes excessively fatigued, exposed to cold, or consumes alcohol, it may cause edema of the urethral mucosa, further aggravating the obstruction. Acute urinary retention may occur in such cases. If timely catheterization and medication are administered, urination can generally be restored.
