Features: The Selected English-Chinese and Chinese-English Dictionary, published in collaboration between the Commercial Press and Oxford University Press, has been in print 12 times since its first edition in 1986 and has been distributed over 1 million copies domestically and worldwide, enjoying great popularity among readers. The Selected Russian-Chinese and Chinese-Russian Dictionary has also been published since 1986 and has gone through 4 printings. Based on the editorial experience of these two dictionaries and in line with China's current development towards all-around reform and opening-up, our press has specially launched the Selected series of bilingual bidirectional (foreign-Chinese, Chinese-foreign) dictionaries. In addition to the two already published, we have added Japanese, German, and French, making a total of five languages: Selected English-Chinese and Chinese-English Dictionary, Selected French-Chinese and Chinese-French Dictionary, Selected German-Chinese and Chinese-German Dictionary, Selected Japanese-Chinese and Chinese-Japanese Dictionary, and Selected Russian-Chinese and Chinese-Russian Dictionary.
Compiling foreign language dictionaries independently by Chinese scholars often struggles with issues such as standardization of language, scope of word selection, and reflection of new linguistic phenomena. Meanwhile, original foreign dictionaries may not fully meet the needs of Chinese readers. To address this, this series of dictionaries has pioneered a collaborative publishing approach by working with reputable foreign publishing houses specializing in dictionary publication. These publishers include: Oxford University Press (Hong Kong), Larousse (France), Langenscheidt (Germany), Orient Press (Japan), and Russkiy Yazyk (Russia).
By adopting or using newly published suitable dictionaries as blueprints, or by having domestic and foreign experts review the preliminary drafts, we ensure that the word selection is precise, definitions are concise, and examples are relevant. This allows the dictionaries to align with foreign usage conventions while meeting the needs of Chinese readers. In recent years, the number of overseas learners and users of Chinese has been growing, so to cater to their needs, pinyin and traditional Chinese characters have been added to the Chinese definitions in most foreign-Chinese dictionaries, while traditional Chinese characters and pinyin are included in the entries of Chinese-foreign dictionaries.
While bilingual bidirectional dictionaries, which combine both foreign-Chinese and Chinese-foreign sections in one volume, are convenient—allowing readers to look up foreign languages in Chinese and vice versa—readers come from various professions and may have specific needs. Some may only require foreign-Chinese dictionaries, while others may prefer Chinese-foreign dictionaries. To accommodate this, both combined and separate volumes are published, enabling readers to choose based on their preferences.
This series of dictionaries is a general-purpose linguistic reference tool suitable for both beginners and intermediate learners, as well as for administrative, secretarial, and professional use in daily work to resolve doubts and clarify questions. The dictionaries are compactly organized, clearly presented, and feature a portable format, making them an excellent reference tool for people from all walks of life.
