Publication Date: 2003-02-01
Features: Globalization is first and foremost an economic development process, but ultimately it is an integrated development process. Whether people are willing or not, as the process of economic globalization unfolds, the globalization of culture, art, ethics, academia, and politics also begins to emerge to some extent. Correspondingly, globalization theory is highly comprehensive, at least including basic contents such as economic globalization, political globalization, social globalization, and cultural globalization. This book is a work compiled by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) through its Council of the Social Sciences of Latin America and the Caribbean, dedicated to the internationally renowned Brazilian scholar Theotonio dos Santos. The purpose of this book is to celebrate Theotonio dos Santos' 60th birthday. The book includes contributions from him and scholars or politicians associated with his work, presenting their own perspectives on the challenges of globalization in different fields. The main theme of the essays in this book is the challenges posed by globalization in the transitional period of the current world system. Overall, the results of this book—despite the different prospects presented in each essay, despite their diversity, multidisciplinarity, and interdisciplinary nature—are a compilation of various reflections on a single dominant idea.
