Features: This issue collects selected articles from a special volume on "Chinese Education and Training" published by Editions Peeters between 2003, drawn from a series of essays included in the Collection de l’Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales of France. The series comprises three volumes, titled Basic Education, Professional Training, and Non-formal Education, fully showcasing the outcomes of an academic conference held in Paris four years earlier with the same theme. In June 1999, the "Chinese Education and Training" international academic conference was successfully held in Paris, organized by the China Research Center of the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales and funded by the Franco-Chinese Foundation. The primary goal of this conference was to move beyond the traditional focus on official examinations and scholar-official training rooted in orthodox Confucianism, exploring neglected educational methods, perspectives, and related issues. These studies remind us that education, as the core of Confucian thought, is not solely implemented by literati and officials but also requires experts from various fields to participate. By examining the education of different dynasties as a whole, spanning from ancient times to the 20th century, we can observe its evolutionary process or fundamental essence.
