Does a newborn need to be held when burping?

Patient's question:

At night, I lay down to feed the baby. Once the baby was full, it fell asleep. I didn't burp it because when feeding while lying down, the baby falls asleep right after finishing, moving around, and this way it won't spit up. I'm very worried. Please ask, do newborns need to be held up to burp?

Doctor's answer:

Generally speaking, we do not recommend feeding while lying down. When the baby burps, it's better not to feed but rather give some water. Pick the baby up and gently pat their back to help with burping. This is because the baby's gastrointestinal system is not fully developed yet, and feeding while lying down can easily lead to choking. However, if you are breastfeeding, there is no need to worry. The baby will naturally regulate how much milk they take in, significantly reducing the chance of choking.
