Publish Date: 2005-03-01
Features: This book was co-authored by six development organizations (bilateral, multilateral NGOs) to broaden the resource base for this discussion. It consists of case studies and thematic papers, funded by BMZ and GTZ, coordinated and edited by ETC. The solutions mentioned in the book were carefully considered during the International Workshop on Urban Agriculture held in Havana, Cuba, from October 10 to 15, 1999, organized jointly by DSE, CTA, and SIDA, with technical support provided by ETC. The local coordination agencies were ACPA and WHH. The book is divided into two important parts: Part I features thematic papers highlighting the importance of urban agriculture. The second part presents specific case studies from cities in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Europe, aiming to better understand the development of urban agriculture under different political, economic, geographical, and ecological conditions, and to find a systematic set of solutions for it. It is hoped that this book will help readers progressively understand the functions and roles of urban agriculture, enabling them to recognize that urban agriculture is an indispensable factor for achieving sustainable development in urban or semi-urban areas.
